About

The North American Pt-to-Pt Association was found in 2001 by former amateur amateur steeplechase jockeys George Strawbridge and Mason Lampton.  NAPPA is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization dedicated to the preservation and perpetuation of the sport of steeplechase racing at the Amateur level.

NAPPA’s goal is to start new pt-to-pt races through foxhunts, focusing on the competition being on the level of that of each individual hunt.  To make this a realistic goal NAPPA created a Field Master’s Chase division.  This race was created by Joe Davies, a retired amateur timber jockey from Maryland, in efforts to teach junior jockeys how to run and jump in a group under control.  In a Field Master’s Chase, the field must follow the “Field Master” over a mapped course typically 2 miles long.  Obstacles include timber and brush fences, as well as water crossings.  The field must stay behind the Field Master, who leads the chase at a brisk hunting pace, and then releases the field to pass him and race to the finish on the flat after the last fence.  Davies created this type of chase to be specifically used at the Maryland Junior Hunt Cup, which he resurrected in 2000.  NAPPA took Davies idea and popularized it.  There are Adult and Junior divisions of the Field Master’s Chase Series, which is for ponies, horse, TB’s, and Crossbreds alike.
